Strategy and Operations

Overview

We build AI technology for the heavy industries. We are a real-world AI company: our AI systems are in factories right now making billions of dollars of decisions per year.

We are growing rapidly through the seed-series A stage, being on track to increase bookings 5x YoY. We aim to take most of our initial market (steelmaking) in the next two years while launching in new industries at the same time.

We are a world-class product and engineering org: our engineers work directly with customers and across the whole technology stack to iterate quickly in a fun, high-trust, but intense environment.

Role

We are looking for a Strategy and Operations Manager. This role is a mixture of (a) solving the hardest problems in the business that are related to ops and finance, and (b) executing a range of core operations and finance functionality to keep a startup running as it scales quickly and internationally. 

Some examples of things you might work on:

  • Strategy: Do analysis and make models to inform critical decisions.

  • People: Build and operate systems for sourcing and onboarding team members. Contribute to designing the org chart.

  • Planning: Help to manage and optimise our complex capacity planning and staffing needs: dynamically figure out how we staff simultaneous complex enterprise projects when the scale is growing constantly

  • Reports and tooling: Figure out how to track our business. Build tools for the whole team to report on this or automate and optimise tasks.

  • Growth: Help to manage our sales pipeline, execute marketing and sales progression, draft, review, and negotiate contracts with customers. 

  • International: We operate globally. We need to create subsidiaries in other countries, operate those subsidiaries, and navigate the complex insurance, tax, and other issues that arise.

  • Workspace: Find our new office/lab and execute the process of moving.

Candidates

We are looking for a world class candidate.

  • You may have experience doing similar work in a startup. You may also come from engineering (software, mechanical, etc) professional services (investment banking, consulting, etc), or investing (VC, private equity, etc).

  • You are extremely disciplined, and be able to be a steady hand under your own direction while our product and engineering org pivots very rapidly and often.

  • You are mathematically sophisticated. You may have studied engineering, economics, mathematics, or another STEM subject. 

  • It’s also useful but not necessary if you have experience programming. Building automations, scrapers, or scripts, or knowing how to query a database and wrangle data is great. 

For this role and all others, we are looking for people with the following attributes:

  • Exceptional ability. Whether in work, school, side projects, or elsewhere, you will have demonstrated exceptional ability. We are open minded about the exact form this takes. Some examples we look for:

    • You have played a key role in an early stage startup

    • You have won hackathons, music, sport, math or other competitions

    • You have an impressive side project, like a popular blog or open source library.

    • Excellent communication in speech and writing.

    • Conscientiousness. You want to do good work, regardless of oversight.

  • You are excited to have freedom to work without too much process and friction, but at the same time, excited to share ideas and work closely with others.

  • You’re excited to work in the metals industries, and everything that goes with it. That means excited to travel, spend time in massive factories, meeting and working with a wide range of people.

  • You are comfortable working in uncertain and dynamic environments.
